Good to know before you install

For computers and laptops; phones get the shared folders with the LibreSync app. Its settings page reaches every shared folder, so keep it to admins.

There's no step-by-step guide for Syncthing here yet. Everything below comes straight from the app catalogue, so it's what LibrePortal really does when you install it. For using Syncthing itself, its own documentation is the place to go: github.com/syncthing/syncthing.

Addresses and ports#

Syncthing has 3 ports. LibrePortal picks a free port number for each when you install, so yours will differ from anyone else's. The Config tab's Network section shows them, and the app's Open button uses the right one.

What it isWho can reach itWith a domain
Web Interface Trusted places only syncthing.your-domain
Sync TCP Trusted places only Port only
Sync (QUIC) UDP Trusted places only Port only

Settings#

In its config file#

Syncthing's own settings aren't on the Config tab yet. They live in the app's config file, described here so you know they exist. How to change them.

Works with#

These are the other apps Syncthing knows how to work with. Once it's installed, its page shows the same list with whether each one is connected. How this works.

  • Shared folders: Sees the shared folders under Shared, so you can keep any of them in step with your computers. There's nothing to switch on; LibrePortal shows whether it can work and lets you check.
  • Grafana: Shows dashboards for the apps that have one. works with every app
  • Prometheus: Collects metrics from the apps that can export them. works with every app
  • Uptime Kuma: Watches your apps and shows when one goes down. works with every app

Privacy and security#

Worth knowing Syncthing moves files directly between your own devices. It finds them through Syncthing's public discovery and relay servers, which can see your device ID and address; that is left on so your devices can reach each other away from home.

What leaves this server#

  • Public discovery and relay servers see your device ID and address
  • Crash reports go to Syncthing after a failure (can be turned off)

What LibrePortal turns off#

  • Automatic upgrades
