Connect the app

Pair the LibrePortal app on a phone or computer with your server using a QR code, a link or a short code, see the devices that are connected, and sign any of them out.

The LibrePortal app is one app for phones and computers. You connect it to your server once, and from then on it signs in by itself. There is no password to type into the app.

Connect a phone or computer#

  1. In the WebUI, open the account menu at the top and choose Connect the app.
  2. A QR code appears, with a link and a short code beside it.
  3. In the app, scan the QR code. If you are on the same device, tap the link. Or type the code (it looks like ABCD-EFGH-JKMN) with your server's address.

The code works once and runs out after ten minutes. A countdown shows how long is left. Making a new one replaces the old one.

On the server itself you can do the same with libreportal app pair.

Each device gets its own key

The code is only a door that opens once. Behind it, the server gives that phone or computer a key of its own. If you lose a phone, you sign out that one device and nothing else is affected.

See your devices and sign them out#

In the account menu, your connected devices are listed with the name you gave them and when each was last used. Press Sign out beside one and it stops working at its next request. A device nobody has used for 180 days is signed out by the server.

An admin can also see and sign out the devices of each person from their page under People. Turning a person off, or deleting them, ends their devices too.

Who sees what#

Your server decides what the app shows each person, so it can never show more than you allow.

  • Members see their own things: their apps, shared folders and alerts.
  • Admins also get the management sections, such as the control panel, backups, people and domains.

The same person can be an admin on their own server and a member on a friend's.

Join a server#

If someone invited you, you do not need a code from them. The invite link, or the QR code shown when they added you, opens straight in the app under Join a server. You choose your own password and the app is connected in one step. The invite still works in a browser too, and keeps its usual rules: one use, 72 hours. See Accounts.

Good to know#

  • Too many wrong codes from one place shut that place out for ten minutes.
  • On your home network or over your VPN the address starts with http://. That is normal there; the code is short-lived and single use.
  • Connecting by code needs LibrePortal 0.10.50 or newer. The phone app page covers installing the app and the older way of connecting by address.
