Connect OVH

How to connect your OVH account to LibrePortal in five steps, what the key lets it do, and how to take the access away again.

LibrePortal can restart and power your OVH servers, set up DNS records, and search for and buy a domain. For that it needs a key from your OVH account. You make the key once, it takes about two minutes, and LibrePortal keeps it in your vault.

The five steps#

  1. Choose your OVH region. Europe, Canada or the United States, whichever your OVH account is in. The app picks the matching OVH page.
  2. Open OVH's key page. The app opens it for you. Sign in with your OVH account, then fill in the form with the name LibrePortal and the description LibrePortal app. The app shows both with Copy buttons.
  3. Paste the two codes. OVH shows an application key and an application secret. Paste both into the app. The secret goes straight into your vault.
  4. Press Connect. OVH's own page opens and lists exactly what LibrePortal may do. Check the list and press Authorise.
  5. Done. The app shows Connected and the rights it holds.

What LibrePortal can and can't do with this key#

It can see your servers and their renewal dates, restart or switch a server on or off, open its console, reinstall it only after you type its name, see your recent bills, read and change DNS records (always with a backup first), order a free DNS zone after you confirm it, and search for and buy a domain only when you press the buy button yourself.

It cannot see your OVH password, and it cannot do anything the list on OVH's approval page did not name. It never places an order that costs money without a clear confirm screen showing the price.

How to remove access later#

Sign in to your OVH account, open the page for API keys, and delete the key called LibrePortal. It stops working straight away. In the app, Disconnect on the OVH page asks OVH to delete the key for you and removes it from your vault.
