Connect Namecheap
How to give LibrePortal API access to a Namecheap account, the account rule Namecheap applies, and what to do if your account is not allowed.
Namecheap lets apps like LibrePortal read and change a domain's records through its API. You turn that on once, in your Namecheap account.
The steps#
- Create or sign in to your Namecheap account.
- Turn on API access. In Namecheap open Profile, Tools, then API Access. Namecheap only allows this on accounts with at least $50 balance, 20 domains, or $50 spent in the last two years.
- Allow this computer's internet address. Namecheap only answers requests from addresses you have allowed. The app can show your address with a Copy button. If your home address changes, update the list.
- Copy the API key and paste it into the app with your Namecheap username.
Namecheap's own help is in its API FAQ.
If your account is not allowed#
You can still use the domain. Choose Somewhere else and LibrePortal shows each record with copy buttons, then keeps checking until they work.
Trying it without a real domain#
The Namecheap connect page has a Use the Namecheap sandbox switch. Namecheap runs a separate test service with fake money and fake domains, with its own free account.
